stevens became the ambassador toe libya back in may. >> new details on a multimillion doll accident on the bay. the 72 foot yacht capsized and late tonight, parts of that battered boat are arriving back on dry land. the crew tossed into the water and they tried the save this nearly $8 mill yonl vessel. cheryl, how does this all end? >> reporter: well, on the one hand, it ended well. there were 14 people on board that boat and all of them are safe. but that fixed wing that we're all familiar with that's usually in the middle of that boat, well, it is shattered. and that is something that team oracle will have to deal with. the practice run was taking place near the golden gate bridge. four miles offshore when the cat ma ran capsized. >> it's pretty scary, i guess.

>> this is one of 14 crew members and sailors on board the ac-72 when it hit a wave, pitched forward and overturned. >> we've been pushing the boat all of the time. every day we go out, we're pushing it more and more. and, yeah, we found our limit today. it was a pretty big crash and we're very lucky no one was injured. >> that was the biggest concern. the team was lucky no one on board was injured. everyone was able to angerhang when the boat took a nose dive. >> i was second to the back. so for me, i was lucky i was able to hold on and then i was just behind jimmy and we slowly made our way down and were able to jump down lower so we didn't land on anything. >> jimmy spittle is the boat's skipper. he says he's experienced something like this on smaller boats, bud never on a boat this size.

a palo alto family is fighting the school district in

court after telling their 11-year-old he needs to leave his school. his parents say he doesn't have the disease, only the gene. but school officials insist other student who is do have the disease are at risk and coleman needs to transfer. the story you'll see only on nbc bay area news. >> reporter: that's right, jessica, we talked with the family tonight. they say they're very disappointed their son is being told to transfer to another middle school for a disease he does not have. but the school district says it's doing what's best fr all of the students. >> the 11-year-old has been told he can no longer go to jordan middle school and now must transfer to turman middle school. the school district says he's a risk to other children. therein lies the dilemma. when he was born, he had je ngec screening done.

doctors found two markers that could lead to cystic fie bro sis. they say they have 11 years of clinical data that shows coleman does not have cystic fieb ro sis. >> they found him with a cyst on his forehead and essentially itch lemt a quo toe system is unnecessary. >> the palo alto unified school district did not want to go on camera instead releasing an e-mail position. part of it which states based on the advice of medical experts who stress the need for nonsibling cf patients to distance each other, we thought it best to place the stunoountst different campuses. >> the school had put on a white coat, diagnosed coleman without any doctor having seen him br

and selected him to be excluded from the school. >> steven jaffe represents coleman and his family. they say the district's ds was made without talking to his doctor. >> it was rushed and even asked why it was rushed and i think there was a certain amount of fear injected into the process. >> reporter: but the school district responds by saying b e based on the inform fs provided to us at the time for all parties, we believed that zero risk was the best course of action. dr. robert wallar has not seen coleman's medical records and could only comment on general as peblgts. he says while it's true that those with cystic fibrosis can affect each other by sharing bacteria, this does not apply to people like coleman. >> that child would not pose risks nor would the child, his or herself be at risk to get an

infection from those other children. so we would think the risks are nejble. . >> honestly, if i thought my child could seriously harm another child or be seriously harmed, i would not be in this. >> now, there will be a court hearing on october 25th. at that time, a judge will rule he can stay here or have to transfer outs. live in palo alto, nbc bay area news. >> it's spreading at an alarming rate. if you don't get alzheimer's disease, there's a good chance someone you know or love will get it. doctors are now treating alzheimer's patients who are in their lower 50s. >> susan describes herself as a type a, go getter. a silicon valley h.r. executive who's always active. but recently, her husband, dave, noticed some changes in her.

>> she would ask similar requests repeatedly. >> so she came here to stand ford hospital where she had several brain scans. she also took several tests like this one to assess her memory and cognitive skills. >> laundermat, plum, bank, tunnel. now, how many of those can you remember? >> after all of her testing rgs at only age 53, susan received a new title. alzheimer's patient. she can no longer work or drive. >> it was just hard. it was like turning my whole life upside down. >> not just hers, but her family's, too. >> it's a difficult diagnosis. you know, that things are not going to get better. >> susan is not alone. >> reporter: the alzheimer's association says of the 5.4

million americans living with the disease, 4% were diagnosed before the age of 65 and that number is growing. >> that means patient's children are younger too. susan's daughter, claire, is only 22 and she's concerned about what she might face. >> you know, you're going to show up and be like oh, my mom doesn't know who i am. that kind of stuff. so it's obviously a real concern. >> behavioral neurologist says however difficult, an early diagnosis can offer patients an advantage with medication. >> yes, taking those medications earlier means that you'll get more use out of them. >> reporter: still, he says, current medications will not slow the progression of the disease. but he says something simple might. >> the one thing that we've identified so far that does seem to slow down the disease process is aerobic exercise. as old fashioned as that sounds, that's still more effective than any medication that's been invented.

>> and he says research shows exercise can help delay the age you develop also hiemer's if you're at risk. as she shares memories with her daughter, susan says she considers her early diagnose know sisz a gift. more time to max decisions about how how she wants to do things. but she also recognizes she may have less time with her family than she'd hoped. >> i want to spend the rest of my life with my family. but i kind of, in my life, i've always tried to take the high road. >> which is why she is now part of a clinical trial at stanford testing a new drug. and she is volunteering with the alzheim alzheimer's association. >> i have to take things day by day. i feel great now. >> in san jose, nbc bay area news. >> we certainly wish her and her family the best.
